The odourless and colourless gas nitrous oxide is inhaled by means of a nose mask and passes through the lungs into the bloodstream and finally into the central nervous system. There it unfolds its effect:

Nevertheless, in contrast to anaesthesia, where the patient loses consciousness and has to be artificially ventilated, with nitrous oxide sedation you remain conscious the whole time, are responsive and can follow the dentist's instructions.
Besides, time flies.
At the end of the treatment, the patient breathes in pure oxygen and is then immediately ready to go again - just totally deeply relaxed.
The term sedation therefore stands for calming and relaxation.
Nitrous oxide sedation is a very safe procedure thanks to modern control technology. The effect sets in very quickly and subsides just as quickly. During the treatment, the pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation of the blood are recorded and controlled.
This attractive method is suitable for almost all people, there are only a few exceptions (for example, people suffering from epilepsy).
In addition to anxiety patients, this technique can also be considered for patients with a strong gag reflex, as this is eliminated by the treatment with nitrous oxide.
By the way: The name "laughing gas" has nothing to do with the fact that one gets a compulsion to laugh when consuming the gas - it originates from the 19th century, when at parties the consumers started to sway and thus made the other guests laugh.
